Gao Zhisheng’s Freedom Is Still At Stake
After being released on Thursday from prison, Gao Zhisheng
was still accompanied by four policemen to his
father-in-law’s home in Urumqi, Xinjiang.
He was restricted from even talking to his wife Geng He
in the US.
International organizations and a US State Department
spokesperson have all called for real freedom
for Gao Zhisheng, removal of monitoring and allowing him
to leave China.
Human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, after the unjust
three year jail term five year probation, has finally
been released on Aug. 7 from Shaya prison in Xinjiang.
His older brother Gao Zhiyi picked him up and accompanied
him to his father-in-law’s home in Urumqi.
The two were closely watched around the clock
by four officers from the National Security to prevent
any contact with the outside world.
At 18:30 on Aug. 7, Gao Zhisheng’s wife Geng He
had a very brief telephone conversation with Gao.
Geng He: “I asked if he’s all right. He said his teeth are bad.
My sister took over the phone quickly
and said his teeth are bad.
Four or five lower teeth are very loose, barely connected
to the gum. The front upper teeth are also bad.”
Geng He indicates the teeth problem illustrates the torture
Gao Zhisheng has received over the years in prison
and the lack of medical care.
Geng He: “He was a relatively well-known lawyer in China.
He has been a conscientious lawyer
with professional standards.
Regardless of their identity or faith, he accepted the case
and served the people.
But, no true belief is allowed, no Christianity, no Falun Gong,
there is no religious freedom.
Gao Zhisheng was persecuted for getting involved
in cases of belief.”
Geng He is very worried about Gao Zhisheng’s physical
health, and hopes he can soon be free and reunited
with families in the United States.
Freedom Now has served as pro bono counsel
to Gao Zhisheng since 2010.
In a press conference, Freedom Now called on the regime
to remove the security cordon around Gao Zhisheng,
to let him speak freely and meet with anyone he chooses,
and to allow him to travel freely both in China and abroad.
U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, Chairman of the House Foreign
Affairs human rights subcommittee also urged the regime
to end its harsh policy of arbitrary detention long used
against human rights lawyer.
The State Department called on Beijing to release all prisoners
of conscience, reported AFP.
“We also urge Chinese authorities to allow him to leave China
to be reunited with his family in the United States if he
so chooses,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf
told reporters.
Human rights lawyer Tang Jitian says that Gao Zhisheng
is innocent.
The sentence was illegal.
The restriction on his freedom has no legal basis.
Lawyer Tang Jitian: “Now he’s officially done with
his sentence, they should allow him to move freely
and freely converse with family.
If they continue to deprive his basic right as a member
of society, the police and the decision makers have violated
the law and constituted a serious crime.”
Beijing lawyer Xie Yanyi has once written, “The endless
injustice against Falun Gong brings endless calamity
to the country.”
Lawyer Xie indicates that even though Zhou Yongkang
was sacked, his evil gang and policy remain.
Lawyer Xie Yanyi: “Zhou Yongkang’s crime against
humanity, violations of human rights, undermining
the rule of law, and perverse acts of vicious crimes
are still be executed throughout China.
Before they are being completely corrected and liquidated,
tens of thousands of innocent people including Gao Zhisheng
will continue to be shrouded by this evil.”
The 50-year-old Gao Zhisheng is a self-taught lawyer.
Since 1996, he has defended for vulnerable groups,
and represented a spate of activists filing lawsuits
against the government.
He was elected one of China’s Top Ten Lawyers
by the Chinese Justice Department.
He was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
In 2004, Gao Zhisheng demanded in an open letter to the CCP
Congress stop the illegal persecution of Falun Gong,
and participated in the investigation of organ harvesting
from living Falun Gong practitioners by the CCP.
Retaliated by the political and legal systems headed
by Zhou Yongkang, his attorney license was revoked
and subsequently, he was secretly abducted and tortured
for four months in 2006.
In August 2006, Gao Zhisheng was arrested on allegations
of “inciting subversion of state power,” imprisoned
for three years, and suspended for five years.
During the five years of probation, he was repeatedly
detained, tortured and abducted for up to three years.
In December 2011, CCP media confirmed that authorities
revoked his probation and transferred him to a Xinjiang
prison.
