CCTV’s Consumer Rights Show Hits Flies, Not Tigers
The annual CCTV ’3.15 Evening Show’ targeted counterfit products. This year the show again exposed defected products and the industries they came from.
Consumer rights violations in China is prevalent, and the evening show defending consumer’s rights was criticized as hitting the ‘fly’ (little corruption)
but not the ‘tiger’ (big corruption.)
This March 15, CCTV designated the show to building consumers’ dignity.
Industries and products that violate consumers’ rights were displayed, such as online shopping, telecommunications and digital products.
According to past experiences, companies and products exposed by the 3.15 Evening Show will either go bankrupt or experience heavy financial losses.
Therefore, the show has become an annual focus of the general public.
Exposed products were the Nikon D600 camera for its dark spots on photos; Kao Hong Precision Industry cellular phone installed with trojan spyware;
Hangzhou company selling expired flour. Guangzhou Internet Technology Company Netease stock fell 5 percent after its business was exposed for stealing users’ information;
Kao Hong stock also fell 3.96 percent and lost more than 50 million yuan in net capital.
Prior to the show, media predicted that the black list would include telecommunications and the healthcare system.
Commentator Qiao Zhifeng criticized the media: “The 3.15 Evening Show was just throwing bricks at a wall. The regime only exposed the industries and the products it intended to. The majority are still kept hidden.”
He wrote, “People used to say the anti-corruption was like ‘throwing bricks at a wall.’ Those who got hit were unlucky. The consumer’s rights nowadays is also like ‘throwing bricks at a wall.’The 3.15 Evening Show and the official inspections are all bricks. Those that were smashed were dejected. Those who avoided being thrown were celebrating.”
Beijing political analyst Hua Po believes the ‘bricks’ of the 3.15 Evening Show were arranged in advance.
Hua Po, Beijing political analyst: “They would not dare throw bricks at companies with elite backgrounds. Take Melatonin as an example. The program was canceled for intending to hit Melatonin. But, Melatonin’s background was huge.
They tried to hit Yilishen. But Yilishen stayed for a very long time. There was support behind these products.”
The world shocking Yilishen scandal took place in November 2007. Media reported that 1.13 million farmers were involved who swindled 20 billion yuan from investors. Zhao Benshan, China’s most prominent comedian celebrity, endorsed the product, and former Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai was Yilishen’s governmental endorsement.
Sun Wenguang, former Shandong University professor: “There are specialized inspection agencies in China dedicated to quality control and supervision. However, many industries bribe corrupt officials to bypass supervision.”
Former Shandong University professor Sun Wenguang added that the CCP officials collude with businesses to place harmful products on the market.
They violate consumers’ rights but at the same time, order CCTV to crack down on fraudulent products.
Sun Wenguang: “CCTV is not a professional organization. It is just a media outlet. But now, it plays the referee to judge what’s harmful and what’s unqualified. A media outlet with so much power is indeed a tragedy in our country.”
Beijing political analyst Hua Po indicates the moral decline in Chinese society has led to fake products and widespread violations of consumer rights
in China today.
Hua Po, Beijing political analyst: “This 3.15 Evening Show talked about consumer’s dignity, but the Chinese are living a life of no dignity, not to mention the consumer’s dignity. The whole show was only hitting flies, not tigers.”
Hua Po also points out that CCTV is itself a false institution.
The so-called crackdown on fraudulent products have in fact become struggle in business and interest. Uncooperative businesses are cracked down on.
They just turn a blind eye to those mercenary tigers.
