Chinese Authorities Persuade Hijacked Chinese Boat Owner

to Pay Ransom

Hijacked Chinese fishing boat owner, Yu Xuejun, posted

updates in his weibo (microblog) account on May 21.

Yu said that N. Korea had freed the vessel and its crews.

Prior to that, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s

Foreign Affairs Ministry had reacted weakly.

More than ten days since Yu Xuejun reported border troops,

the authorities haven’t made any progress in the rescue.

The relevant state department even persuaded

Yu to pay the ransom to solve the issue.

The helpless Yu was forced to

expose the case on the internet.

Yu revealed that around 4 am on May 21,

the vessel captain called him saying that the

N. Koreans had released the vessel and crews.

And that the vessel was making a return voyage.

The captain revealed that for over ten days,

their N. Korean captors had restricted their freedom

and stolen the vessel’s fuel.

Yu Xuejun has said that no ransom has been paid.

On May 6, Yu Xuejun was informed of the hijacking,

he reported it to Chinese border troops right away.

On May 7, Yu received a phone call from the N Korean

hijackers, who demanded that Yu pay the ransom.

Since then, the captors called Yu eight times,

and kept on lowering the ransom demand to 600,000 yuan,

from the initial demand of 1.2 million yuan.

During this period, the CCP authorities took no action.

On May 18, Yu Xuejun, by now without hope,

sought help by posting in his Weibo account.

He pleaded for attention from netizens and

from the CCP Foreign Affairs Ministry.

On May 20, at a routine press conference, a Foreign Ministry

spokesman replied to media questions on the capture.

He said that China had communicated with N. Korea

through relevant channels.

And that China had required N. Korea to

properly handle the case as soon as possible.

A Global Times journalist revealed

in his Weibo post that

“the people concerned” from “the relevant state departments”

had persuaded Yu Xuejun to “pay money to solve the problem”.

The said staff even questioned Yu, asking:

“why did you leak this news to the media?”

Dai Qing, former Guangming Daily journalist, says that

the CCP has spent Chinese taxpayers’ money

feeding the N. Korean regime over the years.

Dai Qing: “Over decades, China’s authorities have used

the Chinese people’s money to keep the N. Korean regime.

This has actually outraged the Chinese people.

So it is hoped that the new leadership under Xi Jinping

can deal with the problem.

That problem is, that the rogue state of North Korea

has been living on the Chinese peoples’ money.”

Zhang Ming, professor at Renmin University of China,

remarks that China-N. Korea relations are very strained.

Prof. Zhang Ming: “As N. Korea’s comrade,

the authorities have long provided financial aid to it.

But N. Korea has resented China over the years.

China is actually what it hates most.

It wants most to set up a direct relationship with the USA.

This is the typical feature of the totalitarian regime.”

Zhang Ming adds that the CCP authorities have always

tried to tone down similar incidents by stealth.

Such as the killing of Chinese border residents,

or the seizure of Chinese fishing boats.

Sometimes, the authorities have even asked

bullied fishermen to resolve the issue privately.

However, the CCP authorities have been known to be

N. Korea’s sole long-term ally in economy and diplomacy.

Why has the CCP has reacted in such a

cowardly manner towards N. Korean challenges?

Zhang Ming: “Firstly, it doesn’t want to see

N. Korea’s collapse.

Secondly, some Chinese leftists believe that

N. Korea is an ideal socialist country.

So they’d like to support Pyongyang, known as

the CCP’s doorkeeper to help resist the USA. But we all know that’s useless.”

Dai Qing: “I speculate that N. Korea may have

grasped some CCP secret. So it has blackmailed like a rogue.

That is, if its demands aren’t met,

it will get rid of the CCP, and seek help from others.”

It is not the first time that N. Koreans have seized

Chinese fishing boats and demanded a huge ransom.

In February, unidentified N. Koreans hijacked

three Chinese fishing boats.

Two of the boats were released after fines were paid.

Another one was returned under diplomatic pressure.

In May 2012, three Chinese fishing boats and

29 crew members were seized,

that time a ransom of 1.2 million yuan

was demanded by the hijackers.
